Cervical screening
anyone with a cervix age 25-70 should be screened for cervical cancer and HPV (Human Papilloma virus). Depending on your history, there are 2 options available; a swab or a smear. This screening is free for Māori and Pacific wāhine or whānau aged 25 to 69, and anyone aged between 30 and 69 who has never had a cervical screen or has not had a cervical screen in the last 5 years.
Skin Checks
Skin cancer is particularly common in New Zealand. A spot check should be carried out every year, especially in fair skinned people. Any new skin spots that are unusual should be checked out as soon as possible.
Prostate Checks
This can start with a blood test PSA if this returns as elevated, you will need a physical examination with your GP. Certain activities can elevate your PSA, so should be avoided prior to the test. e.g. Cycle or horse riding, ejaculation within 48hrs, certain medications- check with your GP.
The risk factors for prostate cancer are:
Age: the risk of prostate cancer increases from age 50
A close family member (e.g. father or brother) affected by prostate cancer
Lynch syndrome (a rare genetic disorder)
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of advanced prostate cancer
Bowel Screening
is free and offered every two years to people aged 60 to 74 years who are eligible for publicly funded health care. The test can be done at home and is simple to do.
Your doctor can initiate screening earlier with a family history of bowel cancer.
